Abuja
This place is growing on me. The landscape is rolling hills, some of which are pretty big. The most distinguishing feature is Aso Rock, a gigantic landmark that juts up several thousand feet. The city is very modern as they only started building it 30 years ago. It is very large but is spread out and there are very few really tall (above 10 stories) buildings. I have met some very nice people who have taken very good care of me. I have been to a few dinner parties and several restaurants with them. I enjoy seeing life in Abuja. It can be very exotic. The costumes that the (rich) people wear are very colorful and beautiful but there are many more poor people here. Last Sunday I visited an outdoor market with friends. It was very interesting to me as it was a jumbled mass of people and small outdoor stalls, selling produce, meat, clothes, household good and all kinds of goods. The produce and fruits looked very good but the meat looked scary as it is just laid out on tables in the open air and there are many flies buzzing around. It is quite common to see people walking around the streets and roads with large bundles on their heads, selling their wares. I will be getting most of my provisions from the states – olive oil, canned tomatoes, paper towels, toilet paper, toiletries, etc. – which I can order over the internet and have shipped over. I played golf for the first time last Saturday. The golf course has a very nice layout and is very beautiful. It was billed in the guide book as being the best in Africa but I have come to understand that it was designated as such by the dictator who had it built.
